How To Install velvet-long on Kali Linux

In this tutorial we learn how to install velvet-long on Kali Linux.
What is velvet-long
velvet-long is:
Velvet is a de novo genomic assembler specially designed for short read sequencing technologies, such as Solexa or 454, developed by Daniel Zerbino and Ewan Birney at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), near Cambridge, in the United Kingdom.
Velvet currently takes in short read sequences, removes errors then produces high quality unique contigs. It then uses paired read information, if available, to retrieve the repeated areas between contigs.
This package installs special long-mode versions of Velvet, as recommended in the Velvet tutorials.
There are three methods to install velvet-long on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install velvet-long Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install velvet-long using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install velvet-longInstall velvet-long Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install velvet-long using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install velvet-longInstall velvet-long Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude updateAfter updating apt database, We can install velvet-long using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install velvet-longHow To Uninstall velvet-long on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the velvet-long package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove velvet-longUninstall velvet-long And Its Dependencies
To uninstall velvet-long and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove velvet-longRemove velvet-long Configurations and Data
To remove velvet-long configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge velvet-longRemove velvet-long configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
