How To Install vc-dev on Debian 11
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install vc-dev
on Debian 11.
What is vc-dev
vc-dev is:
Vc is a free software library to ease explicit vectorization of C++ code. It has an intuitive API and provides portability between different compilers and compiler versions as well as portability between different vector instruction sets. Thus an application written with Vc can be compiled for:
- AVX and AVX2
- SSE2 up to SSE4.2 or SSE4a
- Scalar
- MIC
- AVX-512 (in development)
- NEON (in development)
- NVIDIA GPUs / CUDA (in development)
There are three methods to install vc-dev
on Debian 11. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install vc-dev Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install vc-dev
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install vc-dev

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install vc-dev
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install vc-dev
Install vc-dev Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install vc-dev
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install vc-dev
How To Uninstall vc-dev on Debian 11
To uninstall only the vc-dev
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove vc-dev
Uninstall vc-dev And Its Dependencies
To uninstall vc-dev
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 11, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove vc-dev
Remove vc-dev Configurations and Data
To remove vc-dev
configuration and data from Debian 11 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge vc-dev
Remove vc-dev configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove vc-dev
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge vc-dev
