What is vbindiff

vbindiff is:

Visual Binary Diff (VBinDiff) displays files in hexadecimal and ASCII (or EBCDIC). It can also display two files at once, and highlight the differences between them. Unlike diff, it works well with large files (up to 4 GB).

VBinDiff was inspired by the Compare Files function of the ProSel utilities by Glen Bredon, for the Apple II. The single-file mode was inspired by the LIST utility of 4DOS and friends.

There are three methods to install vbindiff on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install vbindiff Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install vbindiff using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install vbindiff

Install vbindiff Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install vbindiff using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install vbindiff

Install vbindiff Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install vbindiff using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install vbindiff

How To Uninstall vbindiff on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the vbindiff package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove vbindiff

To uninstall vbindiff and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove vbindiff

To remove vbindiff configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge vbindiff
