How To Install variety on Ubuntu 18.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install variety on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is variety
variety is:
Variety is an open-source wallpaper changer, downloader, and manager for Linux. It supports a variety of sources for wallpapers, including local files, online services such as Flickr, Wallhaven.cc, NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day, Desktoppr.co, and media RSS feeds (Picasa, deviantART, etc.).
You can also install the following (suggested) packages to enhance Variety’s functionality on certain desktop setups:
- feh | nitrogen: required for wallpaper changing on i3, openbox, or dwm
- gnome-shell-extension-appindicator | gnome-shell-extension-top-icons-plus: adds tray icon / indicator support to GNOME Shell, so that Variety’s tray icon can be displayed
There are three methods to install variety on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install variety Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install variety using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install variety

After updating apt database, We can install variety using apt by running the following command:

Install variety Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

After updating apt database, We can install variety using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install variety
How To Uninstall variety on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the variety package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove variety
Uninstall variety And Its Dependencies
To uninstall variety and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove variety
Remove variety Configurations and Data
To remove variety configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge variety
Remove variety configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove variety configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge variety
