Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install usbip on Kali Linux.

What is usbip

usbip is:

USB/IP is a system for sharing USB devices over the network.

To share USB devices between computers with their full functionality, USB/IP encapsulates “USB requests” into IP packets and transmits them between computers.

Original USB device drivers and applications can be used for remote USB devices without any modification of them. A computer can use remote USB devices as if they were directly attached.

Currently USB/IP provides no access control or encryption. It should only be used in trusted environments.

This package provides the server component ‘usbipd’ and the client tool ‘usbip’.

There are three methods to install usbip on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install usbip Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install usbip using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install usbip

Install usbip Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install usbip using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install usbip

Install usbip Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install usbip using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install usbip

How To Uninstall usbip on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the usbip package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove usbip

Uninstall usbip And Its Dependencies

To uninstall usbip and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove usbip

Remove usbip Configurations and Data

To remove usbip configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge usbip

Remove usbip configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove usbip configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge usbip
