How To Install upgrade-system on Kali Linux

In this tutorial we learn how to install upgrade-system on Kali Linux.

What is upgrade-system

upgrade-system is:

Upgrade-system offers a convenient way to keep a Debian system up-to-date, yet free from accumulated cruft such as obsolete libraries.

It is particularly useful on systems that mix packages from different releases (stable/testing/unstable) and on desktop systems where packages are frequently installed or removed according to evolving user tastes.

By default, it is configured to purge all packages that are not listed as another package’s dependency. Less drastic settings are possible by editing /etc/upgrade-system.conf(5).

There are three methods to install upgrade-system on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install upgrade-system Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install upgrade-system using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install upgrade-system

Install upgrade-system Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install upgrade-system using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install upgrade-system

Install upgrade-system Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install upgrade-system using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install upgrade-system

How To Uninstall upgrade-system on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the upgrade-system package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove upgrade-system

Uninstall upgrade-system And Its Dependencies

To uninstall upgrade-system and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove upgrade-system

Remove upgrade-system Configurations and Data

To remove upgrade-system configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge upgrade-system
