How To Install unar on Kali Linux

In this tutorial we learn how to install unar on Kali Linux.

What is unar

unar is:

The Unarchiver is an archive unpacker program with support for the popular zip, RAR, 7z, tar, gzip, bzip2, LZMA, XZ, CAB, MSI, NSIS, EXE, ISO, BIN, and split file formats, as well as the old Stuffit, Stuffit X, DiskDouble, Compact Pro, Packit, cpio, compress (.Z), ARJ, ARC, PAK, ACE, ZOO, LZH, ADF, DMS, LZX, PowerPacker, LBR, Squeeze, Crunch, and other old formats.

This package contains the lsar tool which lists the contents of archives and the unar tool which extracts those contents.

There are three methods to install unar on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install unar Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install unar using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install unar

Install unar Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install unar using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install unar

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

After updating apt database, We can install unar using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install unar

How To Uninstall unar on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the unar package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove unar

Uninstall unar And Its Dependencies

To uninstall unar and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove unar

Remove unar Configurations and Data

To remove unar configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge unar
