What is telnetd-ssl

telnetd-ssl is:

The in.telnetd program is a server which supports the DARPA telnet interactive communication protocol.

SSL telnetd replaces normal telnetd using SSL authentication and encryption. It interoperates with normal telnetd in both directions. It checks if the other side is also talking SSL, if not it falls back to normal telnet protocol.

Advantages over normal telnetd: Your passwords and the data you send will not go in cleartext over the line. Nobody can get it with tcpdump or similar tools.

There are three methods to install telnetd-ssl on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install telnetd-ssl Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install telnetd-ssl using apt-get by running the following command:

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install telnetd-ssl using apt by running the following command:

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install telnetd-ssl using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install telnetd-ssl

How To Uninstall telnetd-ssl on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the telnetd-ssl package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove telnetd-ssl

Uninstall telnetd-ssl And Its Dependencies

To uninstall telnetd-ssl and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove telnetd-ssl

Remove telnetd-ssl Configurations and Data

To remove telnetd-ssl configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge telnetd-ssl

Remove telnetd-ssl configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove telnetd-ssl configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge telnetd-ssl
