In this tutorial we learn how to install tachyon on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is tachyon

tachyon is:

Tachyon is a portable, high performance parallel ray tracing system supporting MPI and multithreaded implementations. Tachyon is built as a C callable library, which can be used within applications.

Tachyon implements all of the basic geometric primitives such as triangles, planes, spheres, cylinders, etc. Some of the goals in developing Tachyon were to make it fast and for it to parallelize well. These are what set it apart from more full-featured programs like POV-Ray, Rayshade, and others. Tachyon supports enough features to be an excellent alternative to slower programs for demanding animation and scientific visualization tasks.

This metapackage allows multi-variant support for tools built upon tachyon.

There are three methods to install tachyon on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install tachyon Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install tachyon using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install tachyon

Install tachyon Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install tachyon using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install tachyon

Install tachyon Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install tachyon using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install tachyon

How To Uninstall tachyon on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the tachyon package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove tachyon

Uninstall tachyon And Its Dependencies

To uninstall tachyon and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove tachyon

Remove tachyon Configurations and Data

To remove tachyon configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge tachyon

Remove tachyon configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove tachyon configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge tachyon
