How To Install syslinux on Ubuntu 18.04

What is syslinux

syslinux is:

syslinux is a suite of bootloaders, currently supporting DOS FAT and NTFS filesystems (SYSLINUX), Linux ext2/ext3/ext4, btrfs, and xfs filesystems (EXTLINUX), PXE network boots (PXELINUX), or ISO 9660 CD-ROMs (ISOLINUX).

This package contains the bootloader for DOS FAT and NTFS filesystems (SYSLINUX).

There are three methods to install syslinux on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install syslinux Using apt-get

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install syslinux using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install syslinux

How To Uninstall syslinux on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the syslinux package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove syslinux

Uninstall syslinux And Its Dependencies

To uninstall syslinux and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove syslinux

Remove syslinux Configurations and Data

To remove syslinux configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge syslinux

Remove syslinux configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove syslinux configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge syslinux
