What is strongswan-charon

The strongSwan VPN suite uses the native IPsec stack in the standard Linux kernel. It supports both the IKEv1 and IKEv2 protocols.

charon is an IPsec IKEv2 daemon which can act as an initiator or a responder. It is written from scratch using a fully multi-threaded design and a modular architecture. Various plugins can provide additional functionality.

There are three methods to install strongswan-charon on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install strongswan-charon Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install strongswan-charon using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install strongswan-charon

Install strongswan-charon Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install strongswan-charon using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install strongswan-charon

Install strongswan-charon Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

How To Uninstall strongswan-charon on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the strongswan-charon package we can use the following command:

To uninstall strongswan-charon and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove strongswan-charon

To remove strongswan-charon configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge strongswan-charon

Remove strongswan-charon configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove strongswan-charon configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge strongswan-charon
