What is ssh-audit

ssh-audit is:

ssh-audit is a tool for ssh server auditing with the following features:

  • SSH1 and SSH2 protocol server support;
  • grab banner, recognize device or software and operating system, detect compression;
  • gather key-exchange, host-key, encryption and message authentication code algorithms;
  • output algorithm information (available since, removed/disabled, unsafe/weak/legacy, etc);
  • output algorithm recommendations (append or remove based on recognized software version);
  • output security information (related issues, assigned CVE list, etc);
  • analyze SSH version compatibility based on algorithm information;
  • historical information from OpenSSH, Dropbear SSH and libssh;
  • no dependencies, compatible with Python 2.6+, Python 3.x and PyPy;

There are three methods to install ssh-audit on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install ssh-audit Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install ssh-audit using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install ssh-audit

Install ssh-audit Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install ssh-audit using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install ssh-audit

Install ssh-audit Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install ssh-audit using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install ssh-audit

How To Uninstall ssh-audit on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the ssh-audit package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove ssh-audit

Uninstall ssh-audit And Its Dependencies

To uninstall ssh-audit and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove ssh-audit

Remove ssh-audit Configurations and Data

To remove ssh-audit configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge ssh-audit

Remove ssh-audit configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove ssh-audit configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ssh-audit
