How To Install silx on Debian 12
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install silx
on Debian 12.
What is silx
silx is:
The silx project aims at providing a collection of Python packages to support the development of data assessment, reduction and analysis applications at synchrotron radiation facilities. It aims at providing reading/writing different file formats, data reduction routines and a set of Qt widgets to browse and visualize data.
The current version provides :
- reading HDF5 file format (with support of SPEC file format)
- histogramming
- fitting
- 1D and 2D visualization using multiple backends (matplotlib or OpenGL)
- image plot widget with a set of associated tools (See changelog file).
- Unified browser for HDF5, SPEC and image file formats supporting inspection and visualization of n-dimensional datasets.
- Unified viewer (silx view filename) for HDF5, SPEC and image file formats
- OpenGL-based widget to display 3D scalar field with isosurface and cutting plane.
This uses the Python 3 version of the package.
There are three methods to install silx
on Debian 12. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install silx Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install silx
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install silx

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install silx
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install silx
Install silx Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install silx
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install silx
How To Uninstall silx on Debian 12
To uninstall only the silx
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove silx
Uninstall silx And Its Dependencies
To uninstall silx
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 12, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove silx
Remove silx Configurations and Data
To remove silx
configuration and data from Debian 12 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge silx
Remove silx configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove silx
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge silx
