What is sgml-base

sgml-base is:

This package creates the SGML infrastructure directories and provides SGML catalog file support in compliance with the current Debian SGML Policy draft:

  • infrastructure directories:

    • /etc/sgml
    • /usr/share/sgml/{declaration,dtd,entities,misc,stylesheet}
    • /usr/share/local/sgml/{declaration,dtd,entities,misc,stylesheet}
  • update-catalog(8): tool for maintaining the root SGML catalog file and the package SGML catalog files in the ‘/etc/sgml’ directory.

There are three methods to install sgml-base on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install sgml-base Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install sgml-base using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install sgml-base

Install sgml-base Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install sgml-base using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install sgml-base

Install sgml-base Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install sgml-base using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install sgml-base

How To Uninstall sgml-base on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the sgml-base package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove sgml-base

Uninstall sgml-base And Its Dependencies

To uninstall sgml-base and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove sgml-base

Remove sgml-base Configurations and Data

To remove sgml-base configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge sgml-base

Remove sgml-base configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove sgml-base configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge sgml-base
