What is schedtool

schedtool is:

Schedtool can query or alter a process’ scheduling policy in Linux, specifically assigning SCHED_NORMAL, _FIFO, _RR, _BATCH, _ISO or _IDLEPRIO. It can set static priority for _FIFO and _RR. Setting CPU-affinity and (re)nicing is also possible, making schedtool the definitive interface to Linux scheduler.

It can be used to avoid skips and glitches in A/V applications, to lock processes onto given CPUs on SMP/NUMA systems, which may be beneficial for networking or benchmarks, or to adjust nice-levels of lesser important jobs to maintain a high amount of interactive responsiveness under high load. It is also handy to manage realtime processes.

If you don’t know about scheduling policies, you probably don’t want to use this program - or learn and read “man sched_setscheduler”.

Some supported scheduling policies (such as SCHED_ISO, or SCHED_IDLEPRIO) need a patched kernel (eg. Con Kolivas’ -ck patchset).

There are three methods to install schedtool on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install schedtool Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install schedtool using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install schedtool

How To Uninstall schedtool on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the schedtool package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove schedtool

Uninstall schedtool And Its Dependencies

To uninstall schedtool and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove schedtool

Remove schedtool Configurations and Data

To remove schedtool configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge schedtool
