In this tutorial we learn how to install salt-cloud on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is salt-cloud

salt-cloud is:

Salt is a powerful remote execution manager that can be used to administer servers in a fast and efficient way.

It allows commands to be executed across large groups of servers. This means systems can be easily managed, but data can also be easily gathered. Quick introspection into running systems becomes a reality.

Remote execution is usually used to set up a certain state on a remote system. Salt addresses this problem as well, the salt state system uses salt state files to define the state a server needs to be in.

Salt Cloud is built-in to Salt to provision systems on cloud hosts or hypervisors and immediately bring them under management.

There are three methods to install salt-cloud on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install salt-cloud Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install salt-cloud using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install salt-cloud

Install salt-cloud Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install salt-cloud using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install salt-cloud

Install salt-cloud Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install salt-cloud using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install salt-cloud

How To Uninstall salt-cloud on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the salt-cloud package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove salt-cloud

Uninstall salt-cloud And Its Dependencies

To uninstall salt-cloud and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove salt-cloud

Remove salt-cloud Configurations and Data

To remove salt-cloud configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge salt-cloud

Remove salt-cloud configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove salt-cloud configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge salt-cloud
