How To Install s6 on Ubuntu 22.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install s6
on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is s6
s6 is:
s6 is a small suite of programs for UNIX, designed to allow process supervision (a.k.a service supervision), in the line of daemontools and runit, as well as various operations on processes and daemons. It is meant to be a toolbox for low-level process and service administration, providing different sets of independent tools that can be used within or without the framework, and that can be assembled together to achieve powerful functionality with a very small amount of code.

There are three methods to install s6
on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install s6 Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install s6
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install s6
Install s6 Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install s6
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install s6
Install s6 Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install s6
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install s6
How To Uninstall s6 on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the s6
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove s6
Uninstall s6 And Its Dependencies
To uninstall s6
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove s6
Remove s6 Configurations and Data
To remove s6
configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge s6
Remove s6 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove s6
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge s6
