What is s3cmd

s3cmd is:

Command-line tool to upload, retrieve and manage data in Amazon S3 service (http://www.amazon.com/s3/), designed for use in scripts. Features:

  • creating and destroying S3 buckets
  • uploading and downloading files
  • listing remote files
  • removing remote files
  • synchronizing local directories to S3 buckets
  • getting various information about buckets and disk usage

s3cmd supports both (US and EU) S3 datacentres.

There are three methods to install s3cmd on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install s3cmd Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install s3cmd using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install s3cmd

Install s3cmd Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install s3cmd using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install s3cmd

Install s3cmd Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install s3cmd using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install s3cmd

How To Uninstall s3cmd on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the s3cmd package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove s3cmd

Uninstall s3cmd And Its Dependencies

To uninstall s3cmd and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove s3cmd

Remove s3cmd Configurations and Data

To remove s3cmd configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge s3cmd

We can use the following command to remove s3cmd configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge s3cmd
