How To Install rungetty on Debian 11
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install rungetty
on Debian 11.
What is rungetty
rungetty is:
rungetty might be the getty you were looking for. It is able to run any program, not just login. If a different program than login is used it usually is run as nobody:nogroup, or the user/group specified on the commandline. rungetty can even be configured to autologin, under certain circumstances. See the manual page for more information.
You have to change some lines in /etc/inittab for having any effect after installing the package. rungetty is based on mingetty and therefore not suitable for serial use.
There are three methods to install rungetty
on Debian 11. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install rungetty Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install rungetty
using apt-get

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude

After updating apt database, We can install rungetty
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install rungetty
How To Uninstall rungetty on Debian 11
To uninstall only the rungetty
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove rungetty
Uninstall rungetty And Its Dependencies
To uninstall rungetty
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 11, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove rungetty
Remove rungetty Configurations and Data
To remove rungetty
configuration and data from Debian 11 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge rungetty
