How To Install ruby-xapian on Debian 9

The Xapian search engine library is a highly adaptable toolkit which allows developers to easily add advanced indexing and search facilities to their own applications. It implements the probabilistic model of information retrieval, and provides facilities for performing ranked free-text searches, relevance feedback, phrase searching, boolean searching, stemming, and simultaneous update and searching. It is highly scalable, and is capable of working with collections containing hundreds of millions of documents.
The Xapian Ruby bindings provide an interface to the Xapian library from the Ruby programming language, allowing both indexing and retrieval operations.
There are three methods to install ruby-xapian on Debian 9. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install ruby-xapian Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install ruby-xapian using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install ruby-xapian
Install ruby-xapian Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install ruby-xapian using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install ruby-xapian
Install ruby-xapian Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install ruby-xapian using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install ruby-xapian
How To Uninstall ruby-xapian on Debian 9
To uninstall only the ruby-xapian package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove ruby-xapian
Uninstall ruby-xapian And Its Dependencies
To uninstall ruby-xapian and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove ruby-xapian
Remove ruby-xapian Configurations and Data
To remove ruby-xapian configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge ruby-xapian
Remove ruby-xapian configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove ruby-xapian configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ruby-xapian
