How To Install ripgrep on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install ripgrep on Kali Linux.
What is ripgrep
ripgrep is:
ripgrep is a line-oriented search tool that recursively searches your current directory for a regex pattern while respecting your gitignore rules and automatically skip hidden files/directories (smart filtering) and binary files. ripgrep is similar to other popular search tools like The Silver Searcher, ack and grep.
ripgrep is generally faster than both The Silver Searcher and GNU grep. It
defaults to recursive directory search and won’t search files ignored by your
.gitignore files. Use ripgrep if you like speed, filtering by default, fewer
bugs, and Unicode support.
On the other hand, if you like multiline search, then ripgrep may not quite meet your needs (yet), and it will never support fancy regex features such as backreferences or lookaround
This package contains the following binaries built from the Rust crate “ripgrep”:
- rg
There are three methods to install ripgrep on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install ripgrep Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install ripgrep using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install ripgrepInstall ripgrep Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install ripgrep using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install ripgrepInstall ripgrep Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude updateAfter updating apt database, We can install ripgrep using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install ripgrepHow To Uninstall ripgrep on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the ripgrep package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove ripgrepUninstall ripgrep And Its Dependencies
To uninstall ripgrep and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove ripgrepRemove ripgrep Configurations and Data
To remove ripgrep configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge ripgrepRemove ripgrep configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove ripgrep configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ripgrepDependencies
