Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install recoverdm on Kali Linux.

What is recoverdm

recoverdm is:

recoverdm recover disks with bad sectors. You can recover files as well complete devices. In case it finds sectors which simply cannot be recovered, it writes an empty sector to the output file and continues.

When recovering a CD or a DVD and the program cannot read the sector in “normal mode”, then the program will try to read the sector in “RAW mode” (without error-checking etc.). This toolkit also has a utility called ‘mergebad’ which merges multiple images into one.

This package is useful in forensics investigations.

There are three methods to install recoverdm on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install recoverdm Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install recoverdm using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install recoverdm

Install recoverdm Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install recoverdm using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install recoverdm

Install recoverdm Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install recoverdm using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install recoverdm

How To Uninstall recoverdm on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the recoverdm package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove recoverdm

Uninstall recoverdm And Its Dependencies

To uninstall recoverdm and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove recoverdm

Remove recoverdm Configurations and Data

To remove recoverdm configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge recoverdm

Remove recoverdm configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
