In this tutorial we learn how to install rdma-core on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is rdma-core

rdma-core is:

This package provides the basic boot time support for systems that use the Linux kernel’s remote direct memory access (RDMA) subystem which includes InfiniBand, iWARP, and RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE).

Several kernel RDMA support daemons are included:

  • The rdma-ndd daemon which watches for RDMA device changes and/or hostname changes and updates the Node Description of the RDMA devices based on those changes.
  • The iWARP Port Mapper Daemon (iwpmd) which provides a kernel support service in userspace for iWARP drivers to claim TCP ports through the standard socket interface.

There are three methods to install rdma-core on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install rdma-core Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install rdma-core using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install rdma-core

Install rdma-core Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install rdma-core using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install rdma-core

Install rdma-core Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install rdma-core using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install rdma-core

How To Uninstall rdma-core on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the rdma-core package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove rdma-core

Uninstall rdma-core And Its Dependencies

To uninstall rdma-core and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove rdma-core

Remove rdma-core Configurations and Data

To remove rdma-core configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge rdma-core

Remove rdma-core configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove rdma-core configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge rdma-core
