In this tutorial we learn how to install radvd on Debian 12.

What is radvd

radvd is:

IPv6 has a lot more support for autoconfiguration than IPv4. But for this autoconfiguration to work on the hosts of a network, the routers of the local network have to run a program which answers the autoconfiguration requests of the hosts.

On Linux this program is called radvd, which stands for Router ADVertisement Daemon. This daemon listens to router solicitations (RS) and answers with router advertisement (RA). Furthermore unsolicited RAs are also sent from time to time.

There are three methods to install radvd on Debian 12. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install radvd Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install radvd using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install radvd

Install radvd Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install radvd using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install radvd
