In this tutorial we learn how to install radare2 on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is radare2

radare2 is:

The project aims to create a complete, portable, multi-architecture, unix-like toolchain for reverse engineering.

It is composed by an hexadecimal editor (radare) with a wrapped IO layer supporting multiple backends for local/remote files, debugger (OS X, BSD, Linux, W32), stream analyzer, assembler/disassembler (rasm) for x86, ARM, PPC, m68k, Java, MSIL, SPARC, code analysis modules and scripting facilities. A bindiffer named radiff, base converter (rax), shellcode development helper (rasc), a binary information extractor supporting PE, mach0, ELF, class, etc. named rabin, and a block-based hash utility called rahash.

There are three methods to install radare2 on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install radare2 Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install radare2 using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install radare2

Install radare2 Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install radare2 using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install radare2

Install radare2 Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install radare2 using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install radare2

How To Uninstall radare2 on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the radare2 package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove radare2

Uninstall radare2 And Its Dependencies

To uninstall radare2 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove radare2

Remove radare2 Configurations and Data

To remove radare2 configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge radare2

Remove radare2 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove radare2 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge radare2
