How To Install r-cran-digest on Ubuntu 18.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install r-cran-digest on Ubuntu 18.04. r-cran-digest is GNU R package for hash digest of R data structures

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install r-cran-digest on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is r-cran-digest

r-cran-digest is:

Implementation of a function ‘digest()’ for the creation of hash digests of arbitrary R objects (using the md5, sha-1, sha-256, crc32, xxhash and murmurhash algorithms) permitting easy comparison of R language objects, as well as a function ‘hmac()’ to create hash-based message authentication code.

The md5 algorithm by Ron Rivest is specified in RFC 1321, the sha-1 and sha-256 algorithms are specified in FIPS-180-1 and FIPS-180-2, and the crc32 algorithm is described in ftp://ftp.rocksoft.com/cliens/rocksoft/papers/crc_v3.txt.

For md5, sha-1, sha-256 and aes, this package uses small standalone implementations that were provided by Christophe Devine. For crc32, code from the zlib library is used. For sha-512, an implementation by Aaron D. Gifford is used. For xxHash, the implementation by Yann Collet is used. For murmurhash, an implementation by Shane Day is used.

Please note that this package is not meant to be deployed for cryptographic purposes for which more comprehensive (and widely tested) libraries such as OpenSSL should be used.

There are three methods to install r-cran-digest on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install r-cran-digest Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install r-cran-digest using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install r-cran-digest

Install r-cran-digest Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install r-cran-digest using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install r-cran-digest

Install r-cran-digest Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install r-cran-digest using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install r-cran-digest

How To Uninstall r-cran-digest on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the r-cran-digest package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove r-cran-digest

Uninstall r-cran-digest And Its Dependencies

To uninstall r-cran-digest and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove r-cran-digest

Remove r-cran-digest Configurations and Data
