How To Install qemu-user on Debian 12
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install qemu-user on Debian 12.
What is qemu-user
qemu-user is:
QEMU is a fast processor emulator: currently the package supports ARM, CRIS, i386, M68k (ColdFire), MicroBlaze, MIPS, PowerPC, SH4, SPARC and x86-64 emulation. By using dynamic translation it achieves reasonable speed while being easy to port on new host CPUs.
This package provides the user mode emulation binaries. In this mode QEMU can launch Linux processes compiled for one CPU on another CPU.
If qemu-user-binfmt package is also installed, it will register binary format handlers from this qemu-user package with the kernel so it will be possible to run foreign binaries directly. However, this might not be suitable for using inside foreign chroots, in which case it is possible to use qemu-user-static package instead of qemu-user-binmft, – qemu-user-static will register statically linked binfmt handlers instead.
There are three methods to install qemu-user on Debian 12. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install qemu-user Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install qemu-user using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install qemu-user
Install qemu-user Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install qemu-user using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install qemu-user
Install qemu-user Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install qemu-user using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install qemu-user
How To Uninstall qemu-user on Debian 12
To uninstall only the qemu-user package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove qemu-user
Uninstall qemu-user And Its Dependencies
To uninstall qemu-user and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 12, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove qemu-user
Remove qemu-user Configurations and Data
To remove qemu-user configuration and data from Debian 12 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge qemu-user
Remove qemu-user configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove qemu-user configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge qemu-user
