How To Install python-xapian on Debian 9

What is python-xapian

This package provides Xapian Python bindings for all the packaged versions of Python.
The Xapian search engine library is a highly adaptable toolkit which allows developers to easily add advanced indexing and search facilities to their own applications. It implements the probabilistic model of information retrieval, and provides facilities for performing ranked free-text searches, relevance feedback, phrase searching, boolean searching, stemming, and simultaneous update and searching. It is highly scalable, and is capable of working with collections containing hundreds of millions of documents.
The Xapian Python bindings provide an interface to the Xapian library from the Python programming language, allowing both indexing and retrieval operations.
There are three methods to install python-xapian on Debian 9. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install python-xapian Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install python-xapian using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install python-xapian
Install python-xapian Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install python-xapian using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install python-xapian
Install python-xapian Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install python-xapian using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install python-xapian
How To Uninstall python-xapian on Debian 9
To uninstall only the python-xapian package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove python-xapian
Uninstall python-xapian And Its Dependencies
To uninstall python-xapian and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove python-xapian
Remove python-xapian Configurations and Data
To remove python-xapian configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge python-xapian
Remove python-xapian configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove python-xapian configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge python-xapian
