How To Install python-swiftclient on Ubuntu 18.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install python-swiftclient on Ubuntu 18.04. python-swiftclient is Client library for Openstack Swift API - Python 2.7

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install python-swiftclient on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is python-swiftclient

python-swiftclient is:

OpenStack Object Storage (code-named Swift) creates redundant, scalable object storage using clusters of standardized servers to store petabytes of accessible data. It is not a file system or real-time data storage system, but rather a long-term storage system for a more permanent type of static data that can be retrieved, leveraged, and then updated if necessary. Primary examples of data that best fit this type of storage model are virtual machine images, photo storage, email storage and backup archiving. Having no central “brain” or master point of control provides greater scalability, redundancy and permanence.

Objects are written to multiple hardware devices in the data center, with the OpenStack software responsible for ensuring data replication and integrity across the cluster. Storage clusters can scale horizontally by adding new nodes. Should a node fail, OpenStack works to replicate its content from other active nodes. Because OpenStack uses software logic to ensure data replication and distribution across different devices, inexpensive commodity hard drives and servers can be used in lieu of more expensive equipment.

This package provides a client for the OpenStack Swift API. There’s a Python API (the “swiftclient” module), and a command-line script (“swift”).

This package contains the Python 2.7 module.

There are three methods to install python-swiftclient on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install python-swiftclient Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install python-swiftclient using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install python-swiftclient

Install python-swiftclient Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install python-swiftclient using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install python-swiftclient

Install python-swiftclient Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install python-swiftclient using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install python-swiftclient

How To Uninstall python-swiftclient on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the python-swiftclient package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove python-swiftclient

Uninstall python-swiftclient And Its Dependencies

To uninstall python-swiftclient and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove python-swiftclient

Remove python-swiftclient Configurations and Data

To remove python-swiftclient configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge python-swiftclient

Remove python-swiftclient configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove python-swiftclient configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge python-swiftclient
