In this tutorial we learn how to install python-qtpy on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is python-qtpy

python-qtpy is:

QtPy (pronounced ‘cutie pie’) is a small abstraction layer that lets you write applications using a single API call to either PyQt or PySide. QtPy also provides a set of additional QWidgets.

It provides support for PyQt5, PyQt4 and PySide using the PyQt5 layout (where the QtGui module has been split into QtGui and QtWidgets). Basically, you write your code as if you were using PyQt5 but import qt from QtPy instead of PyQt5.

This package provides the QtPy library for the Python 2 interpreter.

There are three methods to install python-qtpy on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install python-qtpy Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install python-qtpy using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install python-qtpy

How To Uninstall python-qtpy on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the python-qtpy package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove python-qtpy

Uninstall python-qtpy And Its Dependencies

To uninstall python-qtpy and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove python-qtpy

Remove python-qtpy Configurations and Data

To remove python-qtpy configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge python-qtpy
