How To Install python-pycryptodome on Ubuntu 18.04

In this tutorial we learn how to install python-pycryptodome on Ubuntu 18.04. python-pycryptodome is cryptographic Python library (Python 2)

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install python-pycryptodome on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is python-pycryptodome

python-pycryptodome is:

PyCryptodome is a self-contained Python package of low-level cryptographic primitives.

PyCryptodome is a fork of PyCrypto. It brings several enhancements with respect to the last official version of PyCrypto (2.6.1), for instance:

  • Authenticated encryption modes (GCM, CCM, EAX, SIV, OCB)
  • Accelerated AES on Intel platforms via AES-NI
  • First class support for PyPy
  • Elliptic curves cryptography (NIST P-256 curve only)
  • Better and more compact API (nonce and iv attributes for ciphers, automatic generation of random nonces and IVs, simplified CTR cipher mode, and more)
  • SHA-3 (including SHAKE XOFs) and BLAKE2 hash algorithms
  • Salsa20 and ChaCha20 stream ciphers
  • scrypt and HKDF
  • Deterministic (EC)DSA
  • Password-protected PKCS#8 key containers
  • Shamir’s Secret Sharing scheme
  • Random numbers get sourced directly from the OS (and not from a CSPRNG in userspace)
  • Simplified install process, including better support for Windows
  • Cleaner RSA and DSA key generation (largely based on FIPS 186-4)
  • Major clean ups and simplification of the code base

PyCryptodome is not a wrapper to a separate C library like OpenSSL. To the largest possible extent, algorithms are implemented in pure Python. Only the pieces that are extremely critical to performance (e.g. block ciphers) are implemented as C extensions.

This is the Python 2 version of the package.

There are three methods to install python-pycryptodome on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install python-pycryptodome Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install python-pycryptodome using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install python-pycryptodome

Install python-pycryptodome Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install python-pycryptodome using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install python-pycryptodome

Install python-pycryptodome Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install python-pycryptodome using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install python-pycryptodome

How To Uninstall python-pycryptodome on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the python-pycryptodome package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove python-pycryptodome

Uninstall python-pycryptodome And Its Dependencies

To uninstall python-pycryptodome and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove python-pycryptodome

Remove python-pycryptodome Configurations and Data

To remove python-pycryptodome configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge python-pycryptodome

Remove python-pycryptodome configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove python-pycryptodome configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge python-pycryptodome
