In this tutorial we learn how to install python-lightblue on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is python-lightblue

python-lightblue is:

The package provides a Python API which provides simple access to Bluetooth operations. It is available for Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and Nokia’s Python for Series 60 platform for mobile phones.

LightBlue provides simple access to:

  • Device and service discovery (with and without end-user GUIs)
  • Standard socket interface for RFCOMM and L2CAP sockets (currently L2CAP client sockets only, and not on PyS60)
  • Sending and receiving files over OBEX
  • Advertising of RFCOMM and OBEX services
  • Local device information

There are three methods to install python-lightblue on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install python-lightblue Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install python-lightblue using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install python-lightblue

How To Uninstall python-lightblue on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the python-lightblue package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove python-lightblue

Uninstall python-lightblue And Its Dependencies

To uninstall python-lightblue and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove python-lightblue

Remove python-lightblue Configurations and Data

To remove python-lightblue configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge python-lightblue

Remove python-lightblue configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove python-lightblue configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge python-lightblue
