How To Install psad on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install psad on Kali Linux.
What is psad
psad is:
PSAD is a collection of four lightweight system daemons (in Perl and C) designed to work with iptables to detect port scans. It features:
- a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with sensible defaults provided);
- verbose alert messages that include the source, destination, scanned port range, beginning and end times, TCP flags, and corresponding Nmap options;
- reverse DNS information;
- alerts via email;
- automatic blocking of offending IP addresses via dynamic firewall configuration.
When combined with fwsnort and the iptables string match extension, PSAD is capable of detecting many attacks described in the Snort rule set that involve application layer data.
There are three methods to install psad on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install psad Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install psad using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install psadInstall psad Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install psad using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install psadInstall psad Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude updateAfter updating apt database, We can install psad using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install psadHow To Uninstall psad on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the psad package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove psadUninstall psad And Its Dependencies
To uninstall psad and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove psadRemove psad Configurations and Data
To remove psad configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge psadRemove psad configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove psad configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge psadDependencies
