In this tutorial we learn how to install protobuf-lite on Rocky Linux 8.

What is `protobuf-lite`

Protocol Buffers built with optimize_for = LITE_RUNTIME. The “optimize_for = LITE_RUNTIME” option causes the compiler to generate code which only depends libprotobuf-lite, which is much smaller than libprotobuf but lacks descriptors, reflection, and some other features.

We can use yum or dnf to install protobuf-lite on Rocky Linux 8. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install protobuf-lite.

Install protobuf-lite on Rocky Linux 8 Using dnf

Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache --refresh

After updating yum database, We can install protobuf-lite using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install protobuf-lite

Install protobuf-lite on Rocky Linux 8 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache --refresh

After updating yum database, We can install protobuf-lite using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install protobuf-lite

How To Uninstall protobuf-lite on Rocky Linux 8

To uninstall only the protobuf-lite package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove protobuf-lite
