In this tutorial we learn how to install prelude-lml on Ubuntu 18.04.

What is prelude-lml

prelude-lml is:

The Prelude Log Monitoring Lackey (LML) is the host-based sensor program part of the Prelude SIEM suite. It can act as a centralized log collector for local or remote systems, or as a simple log analyzer (such as swatch). It can run as a network server listening on a syslog port or analyze log files. It supports logfiles in the BSD syslog format and is able to analyze any logfile by using the PCRE library. It can apply logfile-specific analysis through plugins such as PAX. It can send an alert to the Prelude Manager when a suspicious log entry is detected.

There are three methods to install prelude-lml on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install prelude-lml Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install prelude-lml using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install prelude-lml

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install prelude-lml using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install prelude-lml

Install prelude-lml Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install prelude-lml using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install prelude-lml

How To Uninstall prelude-lml on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the prelude-lml package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove prelude-lml

Uninstall prelude-lml And Its Dependencies

To uninstall prelude-lml and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove prelude-lml

Remove prelude-lml Configurations and Data

To remove prelude-lml configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge prelude-lml

We can use the following command to remove prelude-lml configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
