How To Install poppler-utils on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install poppler-utils on Kali Linux.
What is poppler-utils
poppler-utils is:
Poppler is a PDF rendering library based on Xpdf PDF viewer.
This package contains command line utilities (based on Poppler) for getting information of PDF documents, convert them to other formats, or manipulate them:
- pdfdetach – lists or extracts embedded files (attachments)
- pdffonts – font analyzer
- pdfimages – image extractor
- pdfinfo – document information
- pdfseparate – page extraction tool
- pdfsig – verifies digital signatures
- pdftocairo – PDF to PNG/JPEG/PDF/PS/EPS/SVG converter using Cairo
- pdftohtml – PDF to HTML converter
- pdftoppm – PDF to PPM/PNG/JPEG image converter
- pdftops – PDF to PostScript (PS) converter
- pdftotext – text extraction
- pdfunite – document merging tool
There are three methods to install poppler-utils on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install poppler-utils Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install poppler-utils using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install poppler-utilsInstall poppler-utils Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install poppler-utils using apt by running the following command:

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude updateAfter updating apt database, We can install poppler-utils using aptitude by running the following command:

To uninstall only the poppler-utils package we can use the following command:

To uninstall poppler-utils and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove poppler-utilsRemove poppler-utils Configurations and Data
To remove poppler-utils configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge poppler-utilsRemove poppler-utils configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove poppler-utils configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
