How To Install podman-docker on Debian 12

In this tutorial we learn how to install podman-docker on Debian 12.
What is podman-docker
podman-docker is:
Podman is an engine for running OCI-based containers in Pods. Podman provides a CLI interface for managing Pods, Containers, and Container Images.
At a high level, the scope of libpod and podman is the following:
- Support multiple image formats including the OCI and Docker image formats.
- Support for multiple means to download images including trust & image verification.
- Container image management (managing image layers, overlay filesystems, etc).
- Full management of container lifecycle.
- Support for pods to manage groups of containers together.
- Resource isolation of containers and pods.
- Support for a Docker-compatible CLI interface through Podman.
Podman is a daemon-less alternative to Docker.
This package installs a wrapper script that acts like the original docker implementation
There are three methods to install podman-docker on Debian 12. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install podman-docker Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install podman-docker using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install podman-docker
Install podman-docker Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install podman-docker using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install podman-docker
Install podman-docker Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install podman-docker using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install podman-docker
How To Uninstall podman-docker on Debian 12
To uninstall only the podman-docker package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove podman-docker
Uninstall podman-docker And Its Dependencies
To uninstall podman-docker and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 12, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove podman-docker
Remove podman-docker Configurations and Data
To remove podman-docker configuration and data from Debian 12 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge podman-docker
Remove podman-docker configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove podman-docker configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge podman-docker
