In this tutorial we learn how to install pngcrush on CentOS 7.

What is pngcrush

%{pngcrush} is an optimizer for PNG (Portable Network Graphics) files. It can be run from a commandline in an MSDOS window, or from a UNIX or LINUX commandline. Its main purpose is to reduce the size of the PNG IDAT datastream by trying various compression levels an PNG filter methods. It also can be used to remove unwanted ancillary chunks, or to add certain chunks including gAMA, tRNS, iCCP, and textual chunks.

We can use yum or dnf to install pngcrush on CentOS 7. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install pngcrush.

Install pngcrush on CentOS 7 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache

After updating yum database, We can install pngcrush using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install pngcrush

Install pngcrush on CentOS 7 Using dnf

If you don’t have dnf installed you can install DNF on CentOS 7 first. Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache

After updating yum database, We can install pngcrush using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install pngcrush

How To Uninstall pngcrush on CentOS 7

To uninstall only the pngcrush package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove pngcrush
