How To Install plover on Ubuntu 20.04

What is plover
plover is:
Plover is a small, slick Python application that runs in the background and acts as a translator to read steno movements and emulate keystrokes in a way that the programs you are using can’t even tell you’re using steno.
Plover is used today by hundreds of people, ranging from professional stenographers, transcriptionists, programmers, and hobbyists. It supports:
- Regular keyboards and real steno machines
- Media key support to control media, change volume, etc.
- Comes with a well-developed theory extended from StenEd, but with over 50,000 new strokes.
- Supports JSON and RTF/CRE dictionaries
- Includes training tools to help you learn
There are three methods to install plover
on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install plover Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install plover
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install plover

Update apt database with apt

sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install plover
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install plover
Install plover Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude

After updating apt database, We can install plover
using aptitude

sudo aptitude -y install plover
How To Uninstall plover on Ubuntu 20.04
To uninstall only the plover
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove plover
Uninstall plover And Its Dependencies
To uninstall plover
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove plover
Remove plover Configurations and Data
To remove plover
configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge plover
Remove plover configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
