How To Install photon on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install photon on Kali Linux.
What is photon
photon is:
This package includes a fast and flexible crawler designed for open source intelligence (OSINT).
Photon can extract the following data while crawling:
- URLs (in-scope & out-of-scope)
- URLs with parameters (example.com/gallery.php?id=2)
- Intel (emails, social media accounts, amazon buckets etc.)
- Files (pdf, png, xml etc.)
- Secret keys (auth/API keys & hashes)
- JavaScript files & Endpoints present in them
- Strings matching custom regex pattern
- Subdomains & DNS related data
The extracted information is saved in an organized manner or can be exported as json.
There are three methods to install photon on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install photon Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install photon using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install photonInstall photon Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install photon using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install photonInstall photon Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

To uninstall only the photon package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove photonUninstall photon And Its Dependencies
To uninstall photon and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove photonRemove photon Configurations and Data
To remove photon configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge photonRemove photon configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
