What is pbzip2

PBZIP2 is a parallel implementation of the bzip2 block-sorting file compressor that uses pthreads and achieves near-linear speedup on SMP machines. The output of this version is fully compatible with bzip2 v1.0.2 or newer (ie with pbzip2 can be decompressed with bzip2).

We can use yum or dnf to install pbzip2 on CentOS 7. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install pbzip2.

Install pbzip2 on CentOS 7 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache

After updating yum database, We can install pbzip2 using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install pbzip2

Install pbzip2 on CentOS 7 Using dnf

If you don’t have dnf installed you can install DNF on CentOS 7 first. Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache

After updating yum database, We can install pbzip2 using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install pbzip2

How To Uninstall pbzip2 on CentOS 7

To uninstall only the pbzip2 package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove pbzip2
