In this tutorial we learn how to install patch on CentOS 7.

What is patch

The patch program applies diff files to originals. The diff command is used to compare an original to a changed file. Diff lists the changes made to the file. A person who has the original file can then use the patch command with the diff file to add the changes to their original file (patching the file). Patch should be installed because it is a common way of upgrading applications.

We can use yum or dnf to install patch on CentOS 7. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install patch.

Install patch on CentOS 7 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache

After updating yum database, We can install patch using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install patch

Install patch on CentOS 7 Using dnf

If you don’t have dnf installed you can install DNF on CentOS 7 first. Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache

After updating yum database, We can install patch using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install patch

How To Uninstall patch on CentOS 7

To uninstall only the patch package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove patch
