How To Install pam_cifscreds on CentOS 8

In this tutorial we learn how to install pam_cifscreds on CentOS 8.
What is pam_cifscreds
The pam_cifscreds PAM module is a tool for automatically adding credentials (username and password) for the purpose of establishing sessions in multiuser mounts. When a cifs filesystem is mounted with the “multiuser” option, and does not use krb5 authentication, it needs to be able to get the credentials for each user from somewhere. The pam_cifscreds module can be used to provide these credentials to the kernel automatically at login.
We can use yum or dnf to install pam_cifscreds on CentOS 8. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install pam_cifscreds.
Install pam_cifscreds on CentOS 8 Using yum
Update yum database with yum using the following command.
sudo yum makecache
After updating yum database, We can install pam_cifscreds using yum by running the following command:
sudo yum -y install pam_cifscreds
Install pam_cifscreds on CentOS 8 Using dnf
If you don’t have dnf installed you can install DNF on CentOS 7 first.
Update yum database with dnf using the following command.
sudo dnf makecache
After updating yum database, We can install pam_cifscreds using dnf by running the following command:
sudo dnf -y install pam_cifscreds
How To Uninstall pam_cifscreds on CentOS 8
To uninstall only the pam_cifscreds package we can use the following command:
sudo dnf remove pam_cifscreds
