In this tutorial we learn how to install p0f on Kali Linux.

What is p0f

p0f is:

p0f performs passive OS detection based on SYN packets. Unlike nmap and queso, p0f does recognition without sending any data. Additionally, it is able to determine the distance to the remote host, and can be used to determine the structure of a foreign or local network. When running on the gateway of a network it is able to gather huge amounts of data and provide useful statistics. On a user-end computer it could be used as powerful IDS add-on. p0f supports full tcpdump-style filtering expressions, and has an extensible and detailed fingerprinting database.

There are three methods to install p0f on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install p0f Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install p0f using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install p0f

Install p0f Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install p0f using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install p0f

Install p0f Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install p0f using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install p0f

How To Uninstall p0f on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the p0f package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove p0f

Uninstall p0f And Its Dependencies

To uninstall p0f and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove p0f

Remove p0f Configurations and Data

To remove p0f configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge p0f
