What is openuniverse

openuniverse is:

OpenUniverse (OU for short) is a fun, fast and free OpenGL space simulator. It currently focuses on the Solar System and lets you visit all of its planets, most major moons and a vast collection of smaller bodies in colorful, glorious and realtime 3D. If you’ve ever had a chance to visit Mercury or asteroid Geographos, here you’ll find them looking exactly the same way, following exactly the same path as when you’ve left them.

Notice that OpenUniverse is not actively being maintained anymore and that users are recommended to use Celestia instead.

There are three methods to install openuniverse on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install openuniverse Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install openuniverse using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install openuniverse

Install openuniverse Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install openuniverse using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install openuniverse

Install openuniverse Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install openuniverse using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install openuniverse

How To Uninstall openuniverse on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the openuniverse package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove openuniverse

Uninstall openuniverse And Its Dependencies

To uninstall openuniverse and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove openuniverse

Remove openuniverse Configurations and Data

To remove openuniverse configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge openuniverse
