How To Install openssl on Kali Linux
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install openssl
on Kali Linux.
What is openssl
openssl is:
This package is part of the OpenSSL project’s implementation of the SSL and TLS cryptographic protocols for secure communication over the Internet.
It contains the general-purpose command line binary /usr/bin/openssl, useful for cryptographic operations such as:
- creating RSA, DH, and DSA key parameters;
- creating X.509 certificates, CSRs, and CRLs;
- calculating message digests;
- encrypting and decrypting with ciphers;
- testing SSL/TLS clients and servers;
- handling S/MIME signed or encrypted mail.
There are three methods to install openssl
on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install openssl Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install openssl
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install openssl
Install openssl Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install openssl
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install openssl
Install openssl Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install openssl
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install openssl
How To Uninstall openssl on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the openssl
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove openssl
Uninstall openssl And Its Dependencies
To uninstall openssl
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove openssl
Remove openssl Configurations and Data
To remove openssl
configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge openssl
Remove openssl configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove openssl
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge openssl
