What is openscap-scanner
openscap-scanner is:
OpenSCAP is a set of open source libraries providing an easier path for integration of the SCAP line of standards. SCAP is a line of standards managed by NIST with the goal of providing a standard language for the expression of Computer Network Defense related information.
The intended scope of this project is to implement working interface wrappers for parsing and querying SCAP content including:
- Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE)
- Common Configuration Enumeration (CCE)
- Common Platform Enumeration (CPE)
- Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS)
- Extensible Configuration Checklist Description Format (XCCDF)
- Open Vulnerability and Assessment Language (OVAL)
This package contains oscap command-line tool, configuration and vulnerability scanner. It can use for compliance checking with SCAP contents.
There are three methods to install openscap-scanner
on Debian 12. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install openscap-scanner Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install openscap-scanner
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install openscap-scanner

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install openscap-scanner
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install openscap-scanner
Install openscap-scanner Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install openscap-scanner
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install openscap-scanner
How To Uninstall openscap-scanner on Debian 12
To uninstall only the openscap-scanner
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove openscap-scanner
Uninstall openscap-scanner And Its Dependencies
To uninstall openscap-scanner
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 12, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove openscap-scanner
Remove openscap-scanner Configurations and Data
To remove openscap-scanner
configuration and data from Debian 12 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge openscap-scanner
Remove openscap-scanner configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove openscap-scanner
