How To Install openambit on Debian 9
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install openambit on Debian 9.
What is openambit
openambit is:
This package provides software that helps communicating with Suunto Ambit outdoor watches.
OpenAmbit offers the following features:
- Read logs from device and save them in XML files;
- Upload logs to movescount.com;
- Update orbital data (for faster GPS sync) to the device.
It doesn’t have the following features (but may include them in future releases):
- Sync user settings from movescount to device;
- Sync apps, routes etc from movescount to device.
The application is divided in 2 parts, libambit which is a basic C-library that does the device-communication, and the openambit GUI application that writes the logs to XML files and synchronize with movescount. The movescount parts is completely optional, and needs to be manually enabled in the UI.
This package provides the GUI interface.
There are three methods to install openambit on Debian 9. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install openambit Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install openambit using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install openambit
Install openambit Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install openambit using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install openambit
Install openambit Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install openambit using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install openambit
How To Uninstall openambit on Debian 9
To uninstall only the openambit package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove openambit
Uninstall openambit And Its Dependencies
To uninstall openambit and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove openambit
Remove openambit Configurations and Data
To remove openambit configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge openambit
Remove openambit configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove openambit configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge openambit
