How To Install open-roms on Debian 12

In this tutorial we learn how to install open-roms
on Debian 12.
What is open-roms
open-roms is:
Using emulators for old retro computers (like the Commodore 64) requires code and data (kernal, basic, characters sets) that was stored in their ROM chips.
This project contains reverse-engineered fully open-source ROMs that can be used with emulators.
Currently the only supported platform is the C64, but as the code is very modular, support for additional platforms might be added in the future.
There are three methods to install open-roms
on Debian 12. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install open-roms Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install open-roms
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install open-roms
Install open-roms Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install open-roms
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install open-roms
Install open-roms Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install open-roms
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install open-roms
How To Uninstall open-roms on Debian 12
To uninstall only the open-roms
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove open-roms
Uninstall open-roms And Its Dependencies
To uninstall open-roms
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 12, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove open-roms
Remove open-roms Configurations and Data
To remove open-roms
configuration and data from Debian 12 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge open-roms
Remove open-roms configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove open-roms

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge open-roms
