What is ntopng-data

ntopng-data is:

ntopng is the next generation version of the original ntop, a network traffic probe that shows the network usage, similar to what the popular top Unix command does. ntop is based on libpcap and it has been written in a portable way in order to virtually run on every Unix platform, MacOSX and on Win32 as well.

ntopng users can use a web browser to navigate through ntop (that acts as a web server) traffic information and get a dump of the network status. In the latter case, ntop can be seen as a simple RMON-like agent with an embedded web interface. The use of:

  • a web interface
  • limited configuration and administration via the web interface
  • reduced CPU and memory usage (they vary according to network size and traffic)

This package contains the architecture independent files for the ntopng daemon.

There are three methods to install ntopng-data on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install ntopng-data Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

Install ntopng-data Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install ntopng-data using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install ntopng-data

How To Uninstall ntopng-data on Ubuntu 18.04

To uninstall only the ntopng-data package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove ntopng-data

To remove ntopng-data configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge ntopng-data

We can use the following command to remove ntopng-data configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ntopng-data
